The Jardins de la Fontaine

Decorated with vases and statues, the Jardins de la Fontaine count as one of the major public gardens in Europe. They were laid out in the eighteenth century on the site of the ancient spring, an area that includes the Tour Magne and the Temple of Diana.

Much work was carried out to embellish Nîmes in the eighteenth century, but the major achievement was the creation of the Jardins de la Fontaine by Jacques-Philippe Mareschal, the king's military engineer, and the Nîmes architect Pierre Dardailhon. The Roman site abandoned since the Middle Ages was discovered during work on regulating the flow of the spring.

The Jardins de a Fontaine are still a favourite place of the locals.
