The conservation area

The conservation area created in Nîmes in 1985 is bounded by the four boulevards that ring the historic centre. With an area of 41 hectares, it has a population of about 5000 people.

There were three reasons for creating a conservation area: to generate dynamism in the historical centre of Nîmes by heritage conservation, to maintain city centre shops and to develop cultural tourism. The restoration of Ilot Littré, a small district inhabited by dyers from the Middle Ages onwards, is a success. Wrought iron, coloured façades, patios and terraces have brought back its southern village charm.
