Cheese and sweets
Le Croquant Villaret
The recipe -kept a secret- has not changed since 1775. The most surprising feature of these long golden biscuits is not their mysterious taste of lemon or honey perhaps, but their texture. They are so hard that you can't bite one without softening it !
This delicacy in the shape of a small pebble combines the crunchiness of almonds and the sweetness of honey. It is found in all the pastry shops in Nîmes.
Pélardon, this small goat cheese comes mainly from the Cévennes. Creamy or dry, excellent pélardons are to be found on the street markets and in the covered market, Les Halles de Nîmes.
Strawberries "de Nîmes" or "Gariguette"
Available from mid-March onwards, strawberries with the "Fraise de Nîmes" (Nîmes strawberries) label are the first spring strawberries in France. Elongated and elegant, the two varieties "Gariguette" and "Ciflorette" are early, grown in soil and particularly flavoursome.
